Michaela Walsh: Women’s World Banking & Micro Entrepreneurship--A Transformational Model

Michaela Walsh served as President of WWB from 1980 to 1990. She was the first woman manager of Merrill Lynch International and serves on the Boards of Directors of several organizations including the Synergos Institute and WorldWide, and as a member of the Advisory Board to the Overseas Development Council, the World Resources Institute, the Energy and Education Study Institution, and USAID. She is a member of many institutions which support and encourage the advancement of women in the economy and environment. Michaela also founded the Global Student Leadership Program (GSL) in NY. The program was initiated to train young women and inspire them to take up leadership for global gender equity in different aspects of life.

Michaela Walsh, founder of Women’s World Banking (WWB), and the Global Student Leadership Program. Women’s World Banking is a leading non-profit microfinance network based in New York that provides financial services to more than 23 million low-income clients in 30 countries world-wide, to improve their living conditions, keep their families, fed, healthy, educated and secure.

WWB is a global network of 53 microfinance institutions and banks and it is based on the idea of lending small sums of money to the poor—particularly women—to start businesses as the path out of poverty. WWB has as its purpose: Being a force for economic advancement of women throughout the world, promoting economic development, fighting poverty, and changing the world through facilitating women’s leadership.

The Nobel Committee’s Economics award announcement for the Grameen Bank stated: “Economic growth and political democracy cannot achieve their full potential unless the female half of humanity participates on equal footing with the male.” Women’s World Banking has a 98% repayment rate and an exponential impact in the community by improving children’s education, health care, and family housing. It’s no secret that loans to women prove highly effective.

But given the statistics of 29,000 children dying daily from malnourishment and treatable diseases, 340 million women around the world not expected to survive to age 40, and 1.8 billion people living on less than a $1 a day with 70 percent of them women, the work has only just begun. There are an estimated 500 million low income entrepreneurs in the world and only 5 % have access to credit.

Marie C. Wilson: Making a Difference in the World and in Your Corporation or Business--Ms. Foundation and The White House Project

An advocate of women’s issues for more than 30 years, Marie C. Wilson is founder and President of The White House Project, co-creator of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work ® Day and author of the Leadership(Viking 2004).

In 1998, Wilson founded The White House Project in recognition of the need to build a truly representative democracy – one where women lead alongside men in all spheres. Since its inception, The White House Project has been a leading advocate and voice on women’s leadership. Before she took the helm at The White House Project, Wilson was, for nearly two decades, the President of the Ms. Foundation for Women. She is an honorary “founding mother” of the Ms. Foundation. In honor of her work, the Ms. Foundation has created The Marie C. Wilson Leadership Fund.

"The Ms. Foundation is filled with social entrepreneurs with a practical eye on today and a vision for tomorrow. It takes on issues that directly affect women’s lives—economic development, safety, and reproductive health, for instance—which is why we knew we had to have substantial numbers of women on top in America to help women at all levels... The White House Project mission is to advance women’s leadership in every sector, up to and including the presidency, changing society from a system built on the labor of women to be led equally be their vision."

She makes the case that a woman’s agenda is about transformation, quoting, Sally Helgesen, in The Female Advantage, that women see their work as: "Encompassing a vision of society—they relate decisions to their larger effect on the role of the family, the American education system, the environment, even world peace . . . They feel they must make a difference not just to their companies, but to the world."

And research proves it works. Management consultants promote and teach the transformational practices of women because it’s just good business practice. They are more inclusive, encourage diversity, expand participatory democracy, and focus commitments that benefit the whole community making politics more relevant.

Margaret Wheatley: Leadership for the Future

Meg Wheatley, author, organizational development expert and founder of the Berkana Institute, teaches leaders and businesses how to exponentially increase corporate results globally. Dr. Margaret J.Wheatley is president of The Berkana Institute, and an internationally acclaimed speaker and writer with a doctorate from Harvard. She has been an organizational consultant and researcher since 1973. "Leadership and the New Science" was first published in 1992, and has been translated into 17 languages. "Finding Our Way: Leadership for an Uncertain Time", was published in January 2005.

Business mirrors life, rich in potential for new possibilities. Like nature, business evolves cyclicaly like the spiral-shaped hurricanes, galaxies, star clusters, the unfurling fern leaf, and the nautilus shell. Closed systems—like mechanical watches, wind down and decay. Command and control business leadership is coming to an end.

A living system behaves in partnership its environment in order to preserve itself and grow. Likewise, a business thrives in partnership with its environment. Openness to the environment does not invite unpredictability, it strengthens and stabilizes our business by drawing on the power of our mission and purpose. This openness creates a stronger system making it more autonomous and resourceful and less susceptible to exogenous forces of change.

This co-evolution between the business system and its environment mirrors the quantum world where everything depends on this relationship between actor (business) and the context (environment). Chaos theory and quantum physics are being applied to business in ways that are creating a shift in management practices.

What we learn about business from this new science is that a critical mass or small changes amplified through networks accelerate change and increases capacity. Neural network theories demonstrate how the flow of information and unusual connections are the source of innovation, efficiency, effectiveness, and optimization.

Ela Bhatt, SEWA in India: Full Economic Citizenship—Empowerment in India

Our guest is a world leader dedicated to empowering the poorest, most marginalized women in the world. You’ll meet Ela Bhatt, founder of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in India, which grew from 4900 members in 1972, to over 700,000 today. Ela is author of the Oxford Univ. Press book, “We Are Poor But So Many,” and she is a global pioneer and entrepreneurial force at the grassroots level. Ela became a lawyer and then a social worker before becoming chief of the women's section of the Textile Labor Association in Ahmedabad in 1968. She learned first hand the suffering of poor self-employed women in the city in Southeast Asia. In 1972, she established the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA). Ela was nominated by the President of India to be a member of the Indian parliament from 86-89, and member of the Planning Commission of India from 89-91. Ela has been chairperson and founding member of the Women's World Banking since 1980

The self employed of India, account for 93% of the labor force—350 million workers, in which 94% of the sector are women. But the self employed are invisible, and worse. They were exploited, underpaid, overworked. Because they are invisible, it might be hard at first for us to draw the connections between our informal labor sector in North America, but sometimes similar conditions exist here at home.

Ela Bhatt, founder of SEWA, enabled over 700,000 women to become financially independent and therefore economically and politically empowered. Ela helped the women organize and provided them with micro credit loans helping them to save and to become financially independent. Today, SEWA Cooperative Bank has $1.5 million in working capital, 30,000 depositors, and 94% loan repayment rate.

Jerry Sternin: The School of Uncommon Sense—Acting your way into a new way of thinking vs. thinking your way into a new way of acting

Jerry Sternin, from Tufts University, former assistant dean at Harvard Business School in Boston, and former Save the Children and Peace Corps director, heads the Ford Foundations Positive Deviance Initiative—you might call it “The School of Uncommon Sense”. I’m quoting from the Harvard Business Review published on the Sternin’s work; “Somewhere in your organization, groups of people are already doing things differently and better. To create lasting change, find these areas of positive deviance and fan their flames.”

Now, I quote Lao-tzu: “Learn from the people, Plan with the people, Begin with what they have, Build on what they know Of the best leaders, When the task is accomplished, The people all remark, We have done it ourselves.”

Jerry and Monique spent a life-time working in the world’s difficult places unraveling some of the world’s most intractable human and corporate problems: malnutrition, school drop out, trafficking of young girls, HIV/AIDS, and female circumcision. They also studied corporations with extraordinary positive deviations in sales performance.

Jerry answers the question: How did you uncover such unconventional wisdom that anyone can learn radical ways to improve their own, or their enterprises’ performance? “People are much more likely to act their way into a new way of thinking than to think their way into a new way of acting.”
